Retailers begin helping with HD-DVD blues

 With Toshiba's HD DVD throwing in the towel, conceding to the more popular Blu-Ray platform, many consumers are finding themselves in the same position that Betamax purchasers found themselves in during the VHS vs Betamax wars; stuck with expensive equipment that is now obsolete.
Circuit City is one of the first retailers to step forward however with a trade in offer. The offer extends to those customers who purchased a HD-DVD player within the past 90 days from the retailer. The return program offers a 100% credit towards a Blu-Ray player. The customer is responsible for paying any differences in price and is only valid for HD-DVD equipment, not the high definition videos. The offer is not being advertised, so customers need to ask for it in the store. An alternative to the exchange is your HD-DVD player can also be exchanged for a Circuit City gift card.

Echostar announces digital television converter for under $40

 Echostar has announced plans to step up to the plate and begin offering set top digital television converters to the public in anticipation of the coming digital television transition which will eliminate analog off the air signals by February 2009. After the transition, consumers with older analog televisions will no longer be able to receive off the air broadcasts without a set top digital receiver or digital to analog converter.
The U.S. federal government has previously announced a $40 rebate coupon would be available to consumers to help subsidize the cost of digital converter, however previous costs for digital set top boxes were far in excess to that.
The Echostar Model TR-40, which will carry a $39.95 suggested retail, is expected to be eligible for the National Telecommunications and Information Association (NTIA) converter-box coupon program, which will make up to two $40 coupons available to households that qualify.

Update to 2009 Digital Convergence

 February 2009 is approaching and there is still a lot of confusion and still numerous problems about the FCC mandated switch from analog television to all digital broadcasts.
The FCC has mandated that all off the air broadcasts must in an all digital format by February 2009, at which time the old analog signals will be shut off. This of course means that analog televisions will require some type of set-top receiver in order to continue to receive local off the air broadcasts. Many newer high end television come with digital tuners built in, allowing reception of off the air digital broadcasts. Older analog televisions however will require a converter box to continue to receive their local programming.

As analog TV fades to white

 This past week, a new bill came before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee that will dramatically affect off-air television signals.
This comes on the heels of a 2002, controversial U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate, designed to help kick-start the digital television revolution. The mandate came after an earlier voluntary request to include digital television tuners in new televisions was scoffed at by many major electronics manufacturers as being too expensive. The FCC mandated that by 2004, all television manufacturers must begin including digital television tuners into half of all televisions that are 36" or larger. By 2007, every new television 13" or larger must include a digital tuner capable of receiving off air digital broadcasts.
From a broadcasting standpoint, the 2002 FCC mandate also forced all television broadcasting stations to begin offering the signals in digital in format by 2007. There are currently over 1500 ...

Dismissed by many critics, this Jerry Bruckheimer-produced adventure became one of 2004's top box-office hits. Nicolas Cage plays a member of a treasure-seeking clan whose latest quest involves the Declaration of Independence ... and a map on the back of it that could lead to a fortune. He races his sinister ex-partner (Sean Bean) to the document, helped by his father, a smart-aleck sidekick and a cryptographer (Jon Voight, Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger).

The Shaggy Dog

The big-budget big-screen remake of the 1959 family classic has made this 1994 made-for-TV update superfluous, although it does stay truer to the original than the 2006 version. It stars Ed Begley Jr. and Sharon Lawrence, with Scott Weinger ("What I Like About You"), the voice of Disney's Aladdin, as teenager Wilby, who inadvertently casts a spell on himself that causes him to turn into a sheepdog. Recommended only if you like the premise but can't stand Tim Allen or Tommy Kirk -- and come on, who could hate the kid from "Old Yeller"?

For those of you who can't get enough of the agony of defeat -- and the feet -- this episode has a couple of segments you'll enjoy. "Not Necessarily the Olympics" showcases goofs and gaffes on the ski slopes and at the ice-skating rink. "Dancing Without the Stars" is a collection of clips of people attempting to dance -- and failing miserably, of course.

Harrison Ford reprises his role as Jack Ryan, a CIA agent who becomes entangled in political double-dealing when he is unexpectedly called in to replace the agency's chief (James Earl Jones). Fast-paced action, a sly script and Ford's admirable performance make this 1994 adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel a real audience pleaser. Willem Dafoe and Anne Archer also star.

Glass House: The Good Mother

Despite the similarities in title and plot, this tepid 2006 suspense tale is not, repeat, not a sequel to the 2001 theatrical thriller "The Glass House" -- which, while not exactly Oscar material, is a far superior film. Longtime "Law & Order" fans might get a kick out of seeing Angie Harmon as a Mommie Dearest to the two orphans she takes in, but everyone else should remember the first law of Lifetime movies: If it has an adjective like "good," "ideal" or "perfect" in its title, chances are it isn't.

Jason Dohring and Shannyn Sossamon also star in "What's Left Behind."
